Talk to your teachers

Your first step should be to talk to your student's teachers. Teachers in BC are on average, skeptical of AI, with only 16% of teachers thinking it helps students. You and your child's teacher want the best for your student.

Teachers in BC are underpaid and over-worked. They have been given zero training on AI in the classroom. The Vancouver School Board released Copilot 13+ at the end of a school year with little warning, and no advice.

Ask if your teacher plans to use AI in classroom work, or give assignments to use AI at home.

Ask how you can support the teacher, for example by stopping your child from offloading thinking onto AI when they complete assignments at home.

Talk to other caregivers and parents

Ask other caregivers how they feel about their children using AI. They may use AI as part of their work, but how do they feel about students using AI before they know how to do something for themselves? Have they heard the common myths about why students should be using AI in classrooms?

To your school board trustees

The school board trustees in your school district have high-level control of the policies that are in place within your district. They don't dictate the "how" of implementation, but they can give the "what". What should be prioritized, what should not be done.

The school board trustees are the best group of people to email to get wider-scale changes made in the district.
